Bri is Danielle- Chapter 3
Footsteps could be heard ascending the stairs from the bathroom. The steps softly approached the bathroom door and a pair of size 6 feet in soft ballerina style slippers popped into from from the hallway as the bathroom door softly opened.
Evie stared at her daughter on the floor wide eyed with a headset and mic still on as she mouthed "Are you ok?!"
Bri stretched her mouth into a line and shrugged. "Spider" and then she got up and slowly closed the door so as not to offend or alarm her mother. Evie squinted and shook her head as she walked back down the hallway to her home office.
"Yes, well the flooring apt is set but they won't be able to return for the cabinets until October....so what date would you guys be available.....?"
Bri listened for her mother's voice to trail off before getting in the shower.
The fuck is wrong with me? She thought. Let's do this and go I need coffee.
Bri wrapped her towel around her and tucked the corner in her pit to be hands free while she got ready. She put moisturizer on her face and some eyeliner and concealer.
She walked back to her room as quickly as possible to avoid her mom just in case she came back upstairs.
She couldn't get her mind off what she had seen. Had she really seen anything? The dream was one thing but she felt like she's really seen that girl again. Maybe the dream had freaked her out more than she had realized.
Bri wasn't the biggest fan of horror movies. Years ago at a sleepover her friends parents had missed the streaming party suggestions and had fallen asleep before realizing Stephen Kings it was being viewed.
Bri wasn't able to use the bathroom after that. After a week her parents decided to sit outside the door to make sure she bathed and brushed her teeth, reminding her that no blood would come out of that sink.
But at her big age she shouldn't have been so spooky. Maybe the imagery of the dream had left an impression on her. But now she started to think....Danielle. that name seemed so random but for whatever reason it was implied that that was the girls name. Bri put on her underwear and a soft cupped bra and began thumbing through her closet for an outfit. It was colder now, basically fall. But she likes to layer and be comfortable.
Overalls? Maybe with leggings and that green cargo jacket....
She wondered if in the dream the girls name was said or she had read it. Now she started thinking back to the details. Red bag. She remembered the shape of the logo on the steering wheel oddly enough. Ford. The cross necklace....ok. Maybe the dream was like...a religious omen?
Damn she needed to hurry. She wanted to tell Lita what she thought.
At that moment Bris phone rang.
Speak of the devil.
Hey babe I don't have much time so I'm pulling up.
Oh! Oh my God ok I'm almost ready.
Fucking Lita. Impatient but always coming in clutch. From her bedroom window Bri could see Lita's little grey sedan pull into their driveway behind her car. Bri threw on her knit hat and a long white summer dress and a hoodie. No time to be fancy. She slipped her feet into her blue and white tennis shoes and grabbed her mini back pack.
Lita held the door open and dramatically bowed and waved Bri into the cafe.
They were in the heart of the college district so all the patrons were students and teachers. It wasn't noisy though- people were deep into computer work and term papers. Just enough so that Bri and Lita's conversation was completely private without having to whisper too much.
"Your not getting much rest lately huh?" Lita asked through sips of her iced coffee. "Maybe we need a sleepover so you can reset? I miss you"
"You see me every week." Bri smiled. It was good to catch up anyways. College pulled her mind away from socializing so it was nice to still be connected to her friend. She saw Lita the most.
"So what happened in this dream?"
"Well. Like I normally don't have nightmares, right?. But this one....it was so real. It felt real. I could feel everything. Ok so I'm driving a car. It's me but it's not me."
Litas eyes locked into Bris as she recounted the whole dream up to the end. Bri explained waking up and exclaiming a name she didn't recognize and the sweating. Then she talked about her morning...
"...so I'm in the bathroom getting ready. Bitch swear to God. Fuck....getting goosebumps thinking about it."
Bri took a breathe to slow down, the image of the pale girl still fresh and creepy in her mind.
"I saw her in the mirror"
Lita, a natural at reacting- gasped.
"Yeah. So I fell back but yeah. Like in the dream I only saw her driving but in the mirror like, I knew it was her. She was wearing the same thing. And I only really saw her face in the mirror. But remember I was her. I could look down and see my body and clothes and she wore the same thing. "
Lita scrunched her eyebrows. "This is so random". Do you think it's like a past life thing?
Bri balked. "Girl why would I have been some random white girl in a past life? I mean we haven't always lived in that house so maybe she's a damn ghost. Ooo I hope not."
Lita pointed out that if she was a ghost she would've haunted Bri and her family by now. They'd lived in the home for 17 years.
"Good point" Bri replied.
Lita grabbed Bri's hand
"I wouldn't worry about it baby. You should sleep in my dorm tonight. We can smoke. Maybe go to a bar? Charnelle wants to meet up to and he's got friends. Wanna come?"
"Ok" Bri said.
Maybe a night out would do her some good.
